Lyrical Errors

CUD: Through The Roof (A&M)

Single review

There's a bit of a marketing Cudcept going on here. With the limited-edition 12' you get a delightful little cardboard Cud house to brighten up your mantlepiece. Frankly, it's silly. An alternative marketing concept for Cud might be to sack the band and give the ocean-going voice of cherubic Carl Puttnam full reign to croon on some knicker-solicitous, belting ballads. Because Carl turns a nice lyric and sings like Tom Jones in a yodelling competition, But with the exception of the student Stones rocker, 'Undoubtedly Thomas', this is drizzly, acoustic guitared indie-pop for Housemartins mourners. To Las Vegas with Mr Puttnam.
